January 07, 2012: Deliberately misleading headline
Police kill 8th grader at Middle School
What about this one?
Brownsville Police Shot and Killed Armed Middle School Student
Probably not. That's why the first headline appeared online, luring readers to a story that was not at all what they were led to believe it would be.
The news story reported that an 8th grader punched a classmate, pulled out what looked like a handgun, and pointed it at police officers who had been summoned to the school. The student refused to put down the gun and the police shot him. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun that resembled a real handgun.
Tragic? Yes. Police brutality? No.
Eventually, people will stop getting tricked by online headlines that are deliberately misleading and will stop clicking to the stories. Hopefully, more truthful headlines will then be used.
